About StoryTokri

How one little listener inspired a growing collection of stories

It started with one little listener

StoryTokri began in 2018 with a very simple idea: could there be something my two-year-old daughter could listen to without needing a screen?

Like many parents, I, Dr Sneha Rao, was looking for ways to keep her entertained, curious and engaged without constantly reaching for a phone or tablet. Stories felt like the natural answer — something she could listen to, imagine and experience in her own head.

That little experiment became our first podcast, Folktales.

And what started as something made for one little listener slowly found its way to many more.

From folktales to a tokri full of stories

After Folktales came original stories, and over time, StoryTokri grew into a collection of different shows and stories for young listeners.

The journey wasn't mapped out from the beginning. It grew one story at a time — shaped by what we enjoyed creating and, more importantly, by what listeners came back to hear.

Then came 2020 and the pandemic. With families spending more time at home, StoryTokri found an even bigger audience. The little podcast that had started as a screen-free alternative for one child was suddenly being discovered by families across India.

Along the way, StoryTokri was featured among the Top 5 Trending Podcasts in India several times — a milestone that meant a lot to us because it showed that these stories were reaching far beyond our original little audience.

Today, we have around 5,000 followers on Spotify, alongside listeners who discover and enjoy our shows across podcast platforms.

Still making room for more stories

StoryTokri has grown, but the idea at its heart hasn't really changed.

We still believe that children deserve stories that can hold their attention without a screen — stories that spark imagination, invite curiosity and give them a world to wander into.

The name says it all: Tokri means a basket.

And this is our basket of stories — folktales, original adventures, familiar voices and new ones — collected over the years and shared with families everywhere.

It started with one two-year-old.
We're excited to see how many more little listeners find their way to the Tokri.
